The 2022 Winter Classic held at Sunshine Coast’s leading golf courses (Maroochy River Golf Club, Twin Waters Golf Club, Noosa Springs Golf Resort, Peregian Golf Course) was held in perfect weather over the 10 – 14th October, with some excellent scoring and smiles all around. The tournament started with superb golf at Golf Sunshine Coast’s newest club, Maroochy River, with all 115 participants enjoying the lunch packs and sunshine. Janette Giudice was the leading ladies scorer with 39 points, and the leading division 1 and 2 men, Lewis Tuck and Andrew McCormack, with equally impressive scores of 40 and 38.
The second day at Peregian Golf Course was superbly coordinated with all players hitting the golf course at lunch time. The course was in great condition considering the unprecedented early winter rain a few weeks prior. With a challenging course, some participants’ smiles wavered slightly, however overall another wonderful day of golf was had! Lewis Tuck had a magnificent hole in one on the 8th to be the highlight of the day. A great score by local member Lloyd Dixon with a 6 point victory with 41 points overall for the division 2 mens and Brendan Muller began his charge to the overall lead with 36 points in the men’s division 1. The ladies competition continued to be a tight race with Judith McLachlan shooting 34 points for the day.
Wednesday was a rest day for our participants, many of whom took the opportunity to explore the local sights of cafes, beaches, restaurants, Eumundi Markets and several other golf courses (because too much golf is never enough!).
Day 3 began bright and early at Twin Waters Golf Club, again with excellent (but brisk) golfing conditions, where Brendon Muller solidified his lead with a winning score of 39 points. Division 2 for the men became even more competitive with a second victory for Andrew McCormack with 38 points on a count back with several other players. The ladies division continued to get closer with Joan Stephens shooting 36 points.
The final round was another early start held at Noosa Springs Golf Resort where the leading players were all seeded together. Brett Tayler put up a tough fight to win the final round with 38 points, but Brendon Muller continued his consistent form to win the overall men’s champion with 147 points for the week. Martin Craig-McFeely had an excellent score of 36 points, however still couldn’t catch the division 2 men’s overall winner Lloyd Dixon with 141 overall. After a close competition, Karen Chappell from New Zealand stormed into the lead with a 34 point round on the last day, solidifying and becoming the ladies overall champion on a count back with 129 points.
The tournament concluded with a magnificent final lunch and presentation, where our daily and overall winners were presented their prizes. Our attention now moves to the Spring Classic which will be held from the 10th-14th of October, where there are still spaces available for new and returning entries. Thank you again to all of our wonderful participants, we hope you had a fantastic week of golf and sunshine.
