The 2023 Sunshine Coast Spring Golf Classic was recently completed, leaving players and organisers delighted with the event’s success. From September 11 to September 15, golf enthusiasts gathered at Sunshine Coast’s best golf courses, enjoying great weather, warm hospitality and a competetive field.
Challenging Start at Maroochy River Golf Club
The Spring Classic commenced at the scenic Maroochy River Golf Club on Monday, September 11. There was a strong wind and few showers, but the course was in excellent condition, contributing to some difficult scoring.
Evie Lim emerged as the leading lady with a score of 32 points. In the Men’s Division, Greg Dowling (Former Australian and Qld Rugby league representative) displayed his skills, scoring 38 points, in Division 1 and in Division 2 Brian Collins left the course with 34 pts and the winner.
The players left Maroochy River Golf Club with a positive outlook, eagerly anticipating some better weather conditions for the upcoming days of golf.
Day 2 Fantastic golf at Peregian G C
On the second day of the tournament, the participants gathered at Peregian Golf, greeted by warm weather and clear blue skies. The golfing action was equally fantastic, with players showcasing their talent. Wendy Gibney claimed victory in the Ladies’ Division with an impressive 44 points. In the Men’s Division, Greg Dowling again impressed with an even better score of 40 points and a 2nd win in Division 1. Michael Byrne emerged triumphant in Division 2 with 38 points. The staff at Peregian Golf ensured outstanding hospitality, enhancing the overall experience for all involved.
A Relaxing Interlude
The middle day of the tournament provided a well-deserved break for the participants. Many took the opportunity to explore the scenic Sunshine Coast, in the beautiful weather. Beachside shops and cafes proved popular destinations, while others enjoyed the vibrant atmosphere of the Eumundi Markets. Some even taking to look for adrenalin and heading to the “Big Cart Track” for some go cart racing.
This “day off” allows everyone to recharge and prepare for the upcoming rounds.
Day 3 Exquisite Golf at Twin Waters Golf Club
The third round, also known as “moving day,” took place at the wonderful Twin Waters Golf Club. The Spring weather on the Sunshine Coast remained delightful, with clear blue skies and a comfortable temperature of 24 degrees Celsius. Participants continued to excel, achieving impressive scores, and competing fiercely. Valesca Thompson led the Ladies’ Division with 38 points, while Greg Dowling continued his winning ways with another victory in Men’s Division 1 with 38 points, and Danny Wolfe emerged triumphant in Men’s Division 2 with 36 points on a countback from Ray Phelps. The players relished a wonderful sit-down 2-course lunch, during the presentations and sharing stories and celebrating their achievements.
Sensational final round of Golf at Noosa Springs
The tournament reached its climax at the stunning Noosa Springs Golf and Spa Resort. Once again, participants enjoyed the typical Spring weather of the Sunshine Coast, further cementing their affection for the region. The golfing action remained highly competitive, with the top eight players in each division in a seeded draw increasing the challenges for victory. As the final day concluded, Sandra Townsend triumphed in the Ladies’ Division with 41 points, while Merv Tappenden and Robert Jones secured wins in Men’s Division 1 (35 points) and Men’s Division 2 (33 points), respectively.
The overall winners of the 2023 Sunshine Coast Spring Golf Classic were Sandra Townsend in the Ladies’ category, Merv Tappenden in Men’s Division 1, and Michael Byrne in Men’s Division 2.
A Resounding Success!
The 2023 Sunshine Coast Spring Golf Classic proved to be a resounding success, attracting over 74 participants. The tournament not only showcased the exceptional golf courses but also highlighted the warm hospitality of the local golf clubs.
